How to Open a Gold IRA and What Actually Happens at Each Step

A gold IRA funded by a direct transfer usually takes one to three weeks from the first phone call to metal sitting in a depository. The account itself opens quickly, often within a business day. Nearly all of the waiting is the institution that currently holds your money releasing it.

What follows is the sequence in order, with the time each stage actually takes, the documents you will be asked for, and the one funding decision that can cost you a fifth of your balance if you get it wrong.

The Realistic Timeline

  • Day 0 to 1. Choose a custodian and a dealer and complete the account application. American Hartford Gold says on its own site that it generally takes one business day to open the account and issue an account number. Most providers are similar.
  • Day 1 to 15. Fund the account. A trustee-to-trustee transfer between IRAs is often five to ten business days. A direct rollover from an employer plan usually takes longer, because the plan administrator runs on its own processing calendar.
  • The day funding lands. Select and price the metals with the dealer. This happens the same day if you have already decided what to buy.
  • Two to seven business days later. The dealer ships to the depository and the depository logs the coins or bars into your account.
  • Two to six weeks after that. Your first custodian statement arrives showing the holdings.

Add a week or two if the money is coming from a 401(k) at a former employer. Our piece on how long a gold IRA rollover takes breaks the funding stage down by source.

Steps 1 and 2, the Custodian, the Dealer and the Paperwork

Two companies are involved and they do different jobs. The custodian is a regulated trust company that holds the account, files the tax reporting and pays the depository. The dealer sells you the metal. Most people arrive through a dealer’s advertising and never think about the custodian, which is backwards, because the custodian is the party that actually holds your account. Augusta Precious Metals routes clients to Equity Trust Company; other dealers work with several custodians. Our breakdown of who does what in a gold IRA covers the third party, the depository, as well.

You can choose your own custodian rather than accepting the dealer’s default. Ask what the alternatives are before you sign, because the custodian relationship is the one you keep if you later move to a different dealer.

The application itself is short. Expect to provide:

  • Government-issued photo identification and your Social Security number.
  • A recent statement from the account you are moving money out of, showing the account number and the current custodian or plan administrator.
  • A completed transfer or rollover request form, which the new custodian normally sends to the old provider on your behalf.
  • Beneficiary designations. Complete these at the outset. Beneficiary paperwork is the field most often left blank and the most expensive one to leave blank.

Step 3, Funding, and the Choice That Can Cost You 20 Percent

There are three ways to move the money and the IRS treats them very differently.

A trustee-to-trustee transfer moves funds between IRAs without them passing through your hands. Nothing is withheld, and the IRS does not count it as a rollover at all, so the one-rollover-per-12-months limit does not apply to it.

A direct rollover from an employer plan sends the money straight to the new custodian, sometimes as a check made payable to the receiving account rather than to you. Nothing is withheld here either.

A 60-day rollover, also called an indirect rollover, pays the money to you and gives you 60 days to deposit it somewhere eligible. This is the one to avoid, and the reason is not really the deadline. A distribution from an employer plan paid to you carries mandatory 20 percent federal withholding even when you fully intend to roll it over. An IRA distribution carries 10 percent unless you elect out. To complete the rollover you must deposit the full original amount, which means replacing the withheld portion from other savings. If you cannot, the shortfall becomes taxable income and, below age 59 and a half, may also draw the 10 percent additional tax. The IRS sets this out plainly and gives a worked example of a $10,000 plan distribution with $2,000 withheld.

Miss the 60 days and the entire distribution is taxable. The IRS can waive the deadline where the delay was outside your control, but relying on that is not a plan. Our comparison of direct and indirect rollovers sets out both routes side by side.

Ask for a direct transfer in writing, and confirm the receiving custodian has initiated the request rather than assuming you are expected to chase your old provider yourself.

Steps 4 and 5, Selecting Metals and Shipping to the Depository

Nothing is purchased until the money has arrived. Once it has, you choose products with the dealer, and the purchase is made by the IRA rather than by you personally.

Eligibility is a purity test plus a source test: .995 fineness for gold and .999 for silver, produced by a mint or accredited refiner your custodian will accept. American Gold Eagles are the well-known exception, admitted by statute despite a lower fineness. Our page on IRA-approved gold has the detail. The shorter version: if a salesperson is steering you toward an exclusive or collectible coin, eligibility is not the thing that should worry you. The premium is.

Metal ships from the dealer to the depository and never to your home. Ask who pays for transit and insurance before you commit, since some dealers cover it and say so on their own sites while others stay quiet. The depositories usually offered are Delaware Depository, Brink’s Global Services and International Depository Services, compared here, and you will choose between segregated and commingled storage at the same point.

Step 6, Confirming the Metal Is Actually There

The account is not finished when the wire clears. You want three documents: the dealer’s invoice listing exact products and quantities, the depository receipt or holdings report, and the custodian’s first statement showing the same items. Compare them against each other rather than reading each one in isolation.

If the three do not agree, that is a question for the custodian rather than for the salesperson. Our guide to verifying your holdings covers what to request and how often.

What Slows It Down

Four things account for most delays: an employer plan that requires its own forms or a spousal signature, an old custodian that still processes transfer requests by post, a signature that does not match the one on the existing account, and an incomplete beneficiary section that stalls the account before funding can even begin.

Two of those are inside your control. Fill in the beneficiary section on the first pass, and sign exactly as your name appears on the account you are moving from.

Common Questions

How long does it take to open a gold IRA?

The account itself commonly opens within one business day. Funding is the long pole: roughly five to ten business days for an IRA-to-IRA transfer, longer for an employer plan. One to three weeks end to end is a fair expectation.

What documents do I need to open a gold IRA?

Photo identification, your Social Security number, a recent statement from the account you are moving, a signed transfer or rollover request form, and beneficiary designations.

How long does a gold IRA rollover take to fund?

Five to ten business days is typical for a trustee-to-trustee transfer between IRAs. Employer plans often run two to four weeks because of their own internal processing.

What happens after I fund my gold IRA account?

You price and select metals with the dealer, the IRA makes the purchase, the dealer ships to the depository, and the depository logs the holdings. Your custodian statement follows within a few weeks.

Do I choose the custodian or does the dealer choose for me?

You choose. Dealers have preferred custodians and will default to one, but you can ask for the alternatives. The custodian is the relationship that survives if you change dealers later.

Can I speed up the gold IRA account opening process?

Somewhat. Have your existing account statement to hand, complete every field including beneficiaries, sign exactly as the old account has your name, and request a direct transfer. The releasing institution sets the rest of the pace.

What can delay a gold IRA rollover?

Employer plan paperwork, spousal consent requirements, a slow releasing custodian, signature mismatches, and blank beneficiary fields. Errors on the transfer form are the most common avoidable cause.
