Goldco is an established dealer with an A+ BBB rating, a named buyback programme and a $25,000 account minimum that rules it out for smaller rollovers. The fees are competitive and knowable before you sign. The part worth reading slowly is the complaint file: 74 complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau over three years, only 13 of them marked resolved, clustering on dealer markup and how long it takes to get your money out.

Goldco at a Glance
Is Goldco Legit
Yes, in the sense that matters operationally. Goldco trades from Calabasas, California, has been accredited with the Better Business Bureau since 2011, holds an A+ rating, and answers the complaints filed against it. Metals get purchased, shipped to a depository and bought back. Nothing in the public record suggests the company takes money and fails to deliver metal.
That is a lower bar than good value, and the two get conflated constantly in gold IRA reviews. An A+ measures how a company responds to complaints, not what it charges. We have written separately about what a BBB A+ rating really measures, because nearly every dealer in this category holds one.
Fees in Dollars and as a Percentage of Your Account
Opening an account costs $50. After that Goldco charges $125 a year for account administration, plus storage that runs $100 a year if your metals are pooled with other holdings and $150 if they are held separately under your name. Goldco's own published fee page puts the all-in annual figure at $225 on non-segregated storage, and the first year at roughly $275 to $325 once setup is included. That is more than most dealers in this category disclose, which means you can work out your cost before you speak to anyone.
The fees are flat, which is the detail that decides who this account suits. A $30,000 account and a $300,000 account pay the same dollar amount. At the $25,000 floor, $225 works out to 0.90% a year. At $100,000 it falls to about 0.23%. At $250,000 it is under 0.10%. What this means for you: the flat structure rewards larger balances, and the $25,000 minimum exists precisely because smaller accounts would be paying an expense ratio worse than most target-date funds.
Over ten years, before any dealer markup, expect roughly $2,300 in account and storage fees. That is competitive with the rest of the field, and you can see how it lands against the others in our comparison of the major gold IRA companies by minimum and fees.
What 74 BBB Complaints Actually Say
Checked on 16 September 2026, Goldco's BBB complaint file holds 74 complaints from the past three years, 38 of them closed in the last twelve months. By type: 21 service or repair, 20 product, 17 sales and advertising, 9 billing, 5 customer service, and one each for delivery and orders.
Read the text and three themes repeat. The first is markup. A March 2023 purchase raised in July 2026 alleges the buyer received 55 gold coins where market pricing would have bought roughly 92. A September 2022 purchase raised in April 2026 puts $55,000 invested against metal worth about $21,000 at spot. The second is liquidation speed: several complaints filed between January and April 2026 describe weeks of unreturned calls before a sale could be processed. The third is the statement gap, and it is the one worth understanding properly.
The Statement Gap and Goldco's Answer
Complaint after complaint describes opening a custodian statement and finding a number far below what was paid, sometimes in a quarter when gold rose. Goldco's reply, written into its own BBB responses, is that the custodian reports spot value rather than the retail value of the metals, and that physical coins are not bought at spot.
That answer is correct. It is also exactly why the complaints keep arriving. You buy at spot plus a premium, and Equity Trust, the custodian that appears throughout the file, reports the spot figure. On a premium coin the difference can be large enough that a new account looks heavily down on day one. Nobody is lying to you. But a buyer who was never shown the premium as a number sees only the gap, and no amount of correct explanation afterwards fixes that. Ask what percentage over spot you are paying, before you fund. Our guide to the questions to ask a gold IRA company before you sign has the exact wording.
Raw complaint counts punish big companies. The more useful number is how many complainants came back and told the BBB they were satisfied. Of Goldco's 74, thirteen are marked Resolved and 61 Answered, meaning the company replied but the customer either rejected the reply or never confirmed. That is a resolved share of about one in six.
For context, on the same day American Hartford Gold's file showed 111 complaints with 53 marked resolved, close to half, on a heavier caseload. That single contrast tells you more than either A+ rating does. It is not proof of bad faith, and some customers simply never respond to the BBB, but a company that closes out half its disputes to the complainant's satisfaction is running a different process from one that closes out a sixth. The head-to-head between Goldco and American Hartford Gold goes through the rest of the differences.
The Free Silver Offer and What It Is Worth on Resale
Goldco's headline promotion is bonus silver. The terms on its own site are specific: up to 5% back in free silver on purchases of $50,000 to $99,999 in premium coins, and 10% on purchases of $100,000 or more, on qualified orders only.
The silver is real. The question is what it is worth. Bonus metal is valued at retail in the offer and sells at close to spot, so the gap between the two is the part you never see. One complaint in the file values a stated $10,000 silver bonus at 49 one-ounce coins, which implies a retail figure north of $204 a coin. Price any promotional metal at what you could sell it for tomorrow, not at the number in the offer, and the same arithmetic applies across the industry. We covered the mechanics in what free silver promotions really cost you.
Buyback Terms and How Liquidation Works
Goldco refers in its own written BBB responses to a Highest Buyback Price model, and the company positions liquidity as a selling point. There is no published spread, so the price you would be offered on any given day is not knowable in advance. Buyback values move daily, which Goldco states plainly.
On timing, the complaint record from early 2026 describes waits of several weeks between requesting a sale and receiving funds, which Goldco attributes to volumes across the industry affecting dealers, custodians and depositories alike. That explanation is plausible and the delays were real. If you expect to need liquidity on a deadline, ask for the current buyback spread and the expected settlement window in writing before you buy.
Who Goldco Suits and Who Should Look Elsewhere
Goldco fits a rollover somewhere between $25,000 and $150,000 where you want a guided phone process, an established name and a dealer that will quote you a buyback price when the time comes. The flat fee structure gets better the more you put in.
Look elsewhere if your rollover is under $25,000, where Birch Gold Group starts at $5,000 and American Hartford Gold at $10,000. Look elsewhere too if fee waivers are your priority at the top end, where Augusta Precious Metals waives fees for qualifying accounts but sets a $50,000 floor. That trade-off is the whole subject of Augusta versus Goldco by rollover size, and the lower end is covered in Goldco versus Birch Gold Group.
Whichever way you go, the number that decides your outcome is not the annual fee. It is the premium over spot on the coins you are sold, and that figure is negotiable in a way the $50 setup fee never will be. Common Questions About Goldco
What is Goldco's minimum investment?
$25,000 for a gold IRA. Direct cash purchases outside an IRA start lower, commonly quoted from $10,000, and are delivered to your home rather than a depository.
Who is Goldco's custodian?
Equity Trust appears throughout the BBB complaint file as the custodian administering Goldco IRAs, named both by customers and in Goldco's own replies. Goldco does not name a single custodian on its website, so confirm yours on the paperwork.
Does Goldco have lawsuits or regulatory actions against it?
No court case or regulatory action surfaced in this review. The public record consists of BBB complaints and customer reviews. Dealers in this category are largely unsupervised, which we explain in who actually regulates gold IRA companies.
How long does a Goldco liquidation take?
Complaints filed in early 2026 describe several weeks from request to funds arriving, involving the dealer, the custodian and the depository in sequence. Get the expected timetable in writing rather than assuming a few days.
Is the free silver worth taking?
It is free metal, so it is not worth refusing. It is worth valuing correctly. Divide the stated bonus by the spot price of silver rather than by the retail figure, and judge the purchase on the premium you paid for the gold.
