Gold IRA Year-End Deadlines for 2026

December 31 is the legal deadline for a 2026 required minimum distribution, a Roth conversion and a qualified charitable distribution. It is not the date to plan around. A gold IRA adds steps a cash IRA does not have, such as selling or shipping metal and getting a valuation, and custodians set their own cut-off dates ahead of the calendar deadline. Ask yours for its date in writing by early November.

This page works backward from December 31 and covers the gold-specific logistics that general year-end checklists skip. Anything marked as a custodian cut-off varies by firm, and we have not assumed a date for yours.

The Dates That Matter for 2026

  • December 31, 2026: deadline for most 2026 RMDs, for Roth conversions to count in 2026, and for qualified charitable distributions to count for 2026.
  • April 1, 2027: deadline for your first RMD if you turned 73 in 2026. Taking it then means two RMDs in 2027, which can push you into a higher bracket.
  • April 15, 2027: deadline for 2026 IRA contributions, which are capped at $7,500, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older, according to the IRS 2026 limits announcement.
  • Your custodian’s cut-off: usually earlier than December 31 for distributions, transfers and conversions. Ask.

The contribution deadline is the tax filing date. The IRS announcement does not restate it, so confirm it against current IRS guidance when you file.

RMDs From a Gold IRA Before December 31

Your 2026 RMD is based on your account balance at the end of 2025 and your IRS life expectancy factor, and it is due by December 31. The IRS sets the penalty for missing it at 25 percent of the amount not withdrawn, falling to 10 percent if you take the shortfall within two years. Our guide to missing a gold IRA RMD covers the correction and the Form 5329 waiver request.

You have three ways to take it from a gold IRA, and each runs on a different clock:

  • Sell metal inside the IRA. You order a sale, the depository ships or transfers the metal, the dealer pays, and the proceeds reach your custodian before the distribution. This is the slowest route and it exposes you to price moves between order and settlement.
  • Take metal in kind. The custodian re-registers the coins or bars to you and reports their fair market value on the distribution date as income. You then hold the physical metal. See how in-kind distributions work.
  • Take it from another IRA. RMDs are calculated for each traditional IRA, but you can withdraw the total from one or more of them. If you hold a cash IRA as well, you can satisfy the gold IRA’s RMD from there and leave the metal alone. Our page on RMD aggregation explains the rule and its limits.

What this means for you: if you plan to sell or ship metal, start in October. If you can use the aggregation rule, the work is a single request on a cash account.

Rollovers and Transfers: Why Cut-Offs Come Early

A rollover into a gold IRA involves your old plan, the new custodian, the dealer and a depository. Each hand-off takes processing time, and year-end is the busiest period for all four. A rollover that reaches your new custodian on December 28 may still be waiting for the order to settle on January 5. That usually does not change the tax year, but it can matter if you are trying to hit a price or finish before an RMD or conversion.

Three rules to keep in view:

  • A direct transfer between custodians is not limited to one a year. An indirect rollover, where a check is made out to you, is limited to one IRA-to-IRA rollover per 12 months, and you have 60 days to deposit it.
  • A 401(k) rolled directly into an IRA does not count toward that limit.
  • Your new custodian can tell you what it needs by when. Ask for the date by which paperwork must be complete for the transfer to land in 2026.

Our walkthrough of how to open a gold IRA gives the realistic sequence, and how to fund a gold IRA compares transfer and rollover methods. If you are choosing a company this late in the year, put the quotes side by side with the table in how to compare gold IRA quotes, and check minimums in the minimum investment comparison. Rushing a decision to beat the calendar is how people skip the questions that matter.

Price risk is the other year-end issue. Your price usually locks on a recorded confirmation call rather than when the money arrives, as covered in price locks and what happens after you fund. Know when yours locks before the holiday slowdown starts.

Roth Conversions and Charitable Gifts

A Roth conversion counts for the tax year in which it happens, and the December 31 date is firm. Converting a gold IRA means the metal’s fair market value on the conversion date is taxed as ordinary income, whether you sell it first or convert it in kind. Because gold has moved sharply this year, check the valuation on the day, not the one on your last statement. The Roth account type itself is explained in traditional vs Roth gold IRA.

A qualified charitable distribution sends money directly from your IRA to a charity, and for people aged 70½ or older it can count toward your RMD without being added to taxable income. The annual cap is adjusted for inflation, so check the current figure in IRS Publication 590-B. With a gold IRA the metal has to be sold first, which costs you the dealer spread. We walk through that in how a QCD works from a gold IRA. The charity must receive the money by December 31, so allow time for a check to clear.

Month-by-Month Checklist: October to December

  • Now to October 31: work out your 2026 RMD from your end-of-2025 balances. Decide whether it comes from metal, in kind or another IRA. Ask your custodian for its year-end cut-off dates in writing.
  • November 1 to 15: place any metal sale or in-kind request. Start any rollover or transfer paperwork. Decide on a Roth conversion amount and a charitable gift.
  • November 16 to 30: confirm every request was received and is not stuck waiting for a signature or a medallion guarantee. Confirm price lock timing with your dealer.
  • December 1 to 15: confirm that proceeds have reached your custodian, that distributions have been paid, and that the charity has received any QCD.
  • December 16 to 31: use this as a buffer only. If an RMD is still outstanding, take it from a cash IRA if you have one.
  • January: check that your 5498 and 1099-R forms match what you did.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take my RMD in gold coins?

Yes, as an in-kind distribution. The custodian reports the fair market value on the distribution date, and that amount counts toward your RMD and is taxed as income.

What is the last day to roll over a 401(k) into a gold IRA this year?

There is no single date. The practical deadline is whatever your plan administrator and your new custodian can process before they close for the year. Ask both, and start well before December.

Can I make a 2026 IRA contribution after December 31?

Yes. Contributions for 2026 can be made until the tax filing deadline in April 2027, within the $7,500 limit, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older.
