Gold IRA Fee Waivers and Promotional Periods Compared by Company

A fee waiver is a marketing tool, not a price cut. It moves cost into later years, and the real comparison is what you pay over five and ten years, not in year one. On the published schedules, American Hartford Gold is cheapest at about $1,750 over ten years, Augusta and Goldco land near $2,300, Birch near $2,400 and Noble near $2,900. Augusta's waiver of up to ten years is the only offer that could erase the whole bill, and it depends on a qualifying purchase size the company does not publish. Smaller accounts are usually the ones left out of the best terms.

Augusta's, Goldco's, Birch's, Noble's and Preserve Gold's figures come from each company's own pages, checked on 2 October 2026. American Hartford Gold's own pages we checked publish no fee schedule, so its fees and first-year waiver are as reported by CNBC Select. Free silver is a different thing from a waiver and is covered below.

What Fees Waived Actually Means and What It Does Not

Ask what the word covers. Augusta says that if you qualify it will waive setup, custodian and storage fees for up to ten years, which is the broadest wording in the field. Preserve Gold says it will waive IRA storage and custodian fees for up to five years depending on starting investment size. Birch pays only the first year's fees, and only on transfers over $50,000. None of these is the same as no fees for life, a phrase we found no company's own page backing with terms. Wire fees, in-kind distribution fees and account closure fees sit outside the waivers we could read. Noble's closure fee alone is $250.

The words up to carry weight. Augusta and Preserve Gold both publish a maximum and no threshold, so the ten years or five years you see in an advertisement is the best case for a large purchase, not a promise to every account. What this means for you: get the exact length, the purchase size that earns it and what the annual fee becomes afterwards in writing before you fund.

The Total Cost of Ownership Math, Five Years and Ten Years

At list price, setup plus annual fees gives the five- and ten-year totals in the table. American Hartford Gold's reported $175 a year totals about $875 over five years and $1,750 over ten. Augusta and Goldco both total about $1,175 and $2,300. Birch totals $1,225 and $2,400, and Noble $1,475 and $2,900. The spread between cheapest and dearest is about $1,150 over ten years.

Now apply a waiver. Birch's first-year waiver, if it covers the $235 annual fee but not setup, cuts the ten-year figure to about $2,165. A fully used Augusta waiver would remove the whole $2,300, but only if you qualify, and the schedule restarts at $225 a year in year eleven. Those are real savings on a long account, and they are small beside the spread. A 3 percent difference in premium on a $50,000 purchase is $1,500, which is more than the whole first five years of fees at any dealer here. Our guide to negotiating gold IRA fees and dealer markups goes into that.

How Account Minimums Gate the Best Promotions

The richest terms sit with the biggest accounts. Goldco's free silver starts at a $50,000 purchase, with up to 5 percent back on $50,000 to $99,999 and 10 percent from $100,000, and its own page says it cannot be combined with other offers. Birch's waiver starts above $50,000. Augusta's minimum is $50,000 before any waiver question arises. American Hartford Gold's top free-silver offer is advertised as up to $15,000 on qualifying purchases, with the threshold unstated.

A smaller rollover therefore gets the list price. At $10,000 a flat $235 or $285 fee is 2.35 to 2.85 percent a year, so the cheapest schedule matters more than any promotion. Our minimum comparison by company shows who even accepts an account that size.

On free silver, price it as you would any gift. Goldco's 5 percent on $50,000 is up to $2,500 of silver, but silver awarded at retail value on a purchase carrying a wide premium returns less than it appears. We ran that math in what free silver promotions really cost you, and free gold IRA kits are covered separately.

Questions to Get in Writing Before You Fund an Account

Put these six to the representative and ask for the answers by email:

  • Which fees does the waiver cover: setup, custodian, storage, wire, closure?
  • How long does it run, and what purchase size earns that length?
  • What is the annual fee in the first year after it ends?
  • What is the premium over spot on the exact products you are buying, and what would the company pay to buy them back today?
  • Does the free silver offer combine with the waiver, and is it valued at retail or at spot?
  • Does the offer expire if you wait a week?

That last question matters because today-only deadlines are a standard pressure tactic. Our questions to ask a gold IRA company before you sign and the piece on how gold IRA salespeople are paid explain why a real offer survives a pause. The full company comparison and the head-to-head American Hartford Gold vs Preserve Gold show the wider field.

On the commercial side: we have affiliate relationships with Augusta Precious Metals, Goldco, Birch Gold Group, American Hartford Gold and Noble Gold, and may earn a commission if you open an account through the links on this page. We have none with Preserve Gold. It did not change the figures or the conclusion that a waiver is worth less than the spread.

Common Questions

What does no fees for life mean for a gold IRA?

We found no company's own page that publishes terms for it. Treat it as a headline and ask what is covered and for how long.

Do gold IRA fee waivers expire?

Yes. Augusta's runs up to ten years, Preserve Gold's up to five and Birch's one, and the annual fee starts after that.

Which gold IRA company has the best fee waiver deal?

Augusta's offer is the longest, but it needs a $50,000 account and a qualifying purchase it does not specify. For the lowest list price, American Hartford Gold's reported fees are lowest.

Is free storage for a gold IRA really free?

Only while the waiver lasts, and the cost can return through the premium on your purchase. Check the post-waiver storage fee.

How much do gold IRA fees cost after a promotion ends?

On published schedules, about $175 to $285 a year. Preserve Gold does not publish its figure.

Do I need a minimum investment to qualify for a gold IRA fee waiver?

In practice yes. Birch's starts above $50,000 and Augusta needs its $50,000 account minimum. Preserve Gold ties it to starting investment size without naming a figure.
