At $250,000 and above, a company's headline minimum stops mattering. What decides your cost is the spread on the metal you buy, whether storage is a flat dollar fee or a percentage of your balance, and how you structure the purchase. Among the companies whose fees we have verified, Augusta, Goldco and Birch Gold publish flat annual fees within $10 of each other, so the real difference will come from the written quote on the metal. Get at least three.
The table below uses each company's own published schedule. It assumes the flat figure still applies at your balance, so confirm that in writing before you fund.
Figures checked on each company's own pages between 2 September and 2 October 2026. Dealers change terms without notice.
Two well-known names are missing from the table on purpose. American Hartford Gold publishes no fee schedule on its own site, and the $175 annual figure comes from third-party reporting we could not verify. Preserve Gold publishes neither a minimum nor fees. We do not rank what we cannot source.
Why Account Size Changes How You Choose
A small account can shrug off a bad fee structure. A large one cannot, because anything charged as a percentage compounds with your balance, and anything charged on the metal is a bigger number on a bigger purchase. Our guide to flat versus percentage-based storage fees puts percentage storage at roughly 0.5% to 1% of value per year. A flat schedule of $225 to $285 barely moves.
What a Large Rollover Really Costs
These are illustrations, not quotes. They show how the two fee models separate as the balance grows.
- $250,000: percentage storage at 0.5% to 1% costs $1,250 to $2,500 a year. The flat schedules above cost $225 to $285.
- $500,000: percentage storage costs $2,500 to $5,000 a year. Held for ten years at a constant balance, 0.75% adds up to $37,500, against roughly $2,300 on Augusta's published ten-year total.
- $1,000,000: percentage storage costs $5,000 to $10,000 a year. The flat schedules still sit near $225 to $285.
The spread on the metal can outweigh all of it. One percentage point of difference between two quotes on a $500,000 purchase is $5,000, paid once and baked into the price. What this means for you: storage structure is the cost you pay every year, but the quote on the metal is the cost you pay first and often the larger one.
Companies Compared for Large Accounts
Augusta Precious Metals has the highest minimum at $50,000, which is irrelevant here, and the most generous published offer, a fee waiver for up to 10 years. The threshold for it is not published, so ask what your balance qualifies for. See our Augusta review.
Goldco offers free silver rather than a fee waiver: up to 5% on $50,000 to $99,999 and 10% on $100,000 and above, on qualifying orders. Free silver is paid in premium coins, so weigh it against the spread. Our page on what free silver promotions really cost explains why. Read the Goldco review for the complaint record.
Birch Gold Group states in plain words that its $235 annual fee is flat no matter how large the account, and it pays the first year's fees on transfers over $50,000. Birch does not publish a buyback spread, so get one in writing. Details are in our Birch review.
Noble Gold charges the highest of the four flat fees at $285 and lists no waiver. The gap is small in dollars, so Noble only makes sense if its quote on the metal wins. See the Noble review.
For a side-by-side of every company we cover, use our best gold IRA companies comparison. Our verdict for a large rollover: Augusta, Goldco and Birch are effectively tied on published annual cost, so choose between them on the written quote, the product list and the buyback terms. We earn referral fees from Augusta and Goldco, which is why we show the other companies and the figures side by side.
Storage, Insurance and Splitting Risk
Depositories carry all-risk coverage through Lloyd's of London, but the limit is a facility-wide aggregate, not a guarantee to each client, according to our depository comparison. We have not verified each depository's limit directly, so ask for the current certificate. Also ask whether segregated storage costs extra at your depository. At some it is a multiple of the commingled rate.
You can split a large rollover across metals, depositories or dealers. Direct trustee-to-trustee transfers and direct plan-to-IRA rollovers are not caught by the IRS limit of one indirect IRA-to-IRA rollover per 12 months, as described on the IRS rollover page. Splitting across two dealers costs an extra setup fee of about $50 and creates a second set of annual fees, which is small next to a spread that two competing quotes can narrow. It also reduces the money exposed in any single purchase. Lock each price in writing, as covered in price locks and what happens after you fund the account.
How to Get and Compare Written Quotes
Ask every company for the same things in writing: the exact products and quantities, the price per ounce against spot, all one-time and annual fees, the price-lock terms, and the buyback spread. A guarantee to pay the highest buyback price is a marketing phrase until it appears as a number. Our walkthrough on comparing quotes side by side covers the worksheet, and how to negotiate fees and dealer markups covers what is worth pushing on.
When Not to Put This Much in Gold
Gold produces no income and can fall for years. A large rollover into one asset concentrates your retirement in something that also forces decisions later, because a traditional gold IRA still has required minimum distributions that you meet by selling metal or taking it in kind. If the amount is a large share of your savings, speak to a fee-only adviser before you commit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a maximum you can put in a gold IRA?
The IRS contribution limits apply to new contributions, not to money you roll over from a 401(k) or another IRA. Companies set minimums, not maximums.
Can you negotiate fees on a large rollover?
Yes, mostly on the metal and on any waiver. Annual custodian fees are usually fixed schedules. A competing written quote is the strongest lever you have.
Is gold IRA insurance enough for a large account?
Coverage is an aggregate for the whole facility. Ask the depository how it applies to your holdings, and ask your custodian for statements that confirm what is held in your name.
